We all know that working in the engine bay can mean dropping a bolt and losing it to the great beyond that is somewhere underneath the intake manifold, around the alternator. Depending on the job, that bolt or nut is now gone forever, never to return. You cant see 104° around a corner, and the small mirrors you have are too big to fit in those spaces.

Thankfully, there is a tool just for the job. If any of that sounded familiar, then we suggest you look into the Cal-Van CV84 WiFi Borescope. This tool will allow you to locate bolts in the tightest spots, ensuring you’ll never lose a bolt on the engine again.

What can this WiFi borescope do?

Cal-Van designed this borescope with the harshest conditions in mind. Looking down into cylinder heads and cylinders can expose the camera to oil, gasoline, and lots of carbon buildup. To negate any of their effects, the camera Cal-Van used is IP67 certified. The camera is entirely resistant to dust and dirt and is submersible in liquid for up to 1 meter. This certification ensures that this camera will be able to handle whatever you ask of it.

The borescope is also equipped with six LEDs around the camera to illuminate the area the camera is pointed towards to give you the ability to see while submerged or in dark places. The camera itself is capable of HD 1080p video and will connect directly to your phone because of its WiFi capability once you install the proper app on your mobile device. With that app, you can record what the camera sees for later examination by you or anyone else. The camera mounts to the end of a flexible, 58” long cable that will hold the shape of any bend that you give it.

What attachments that come with it?

Cal-Van understood what could be asked of the borescope and included three attachments to help it be more than just a camera. First, they included a mirror attachment. Like the other attachments, the mirror mounts to the end of the camera and makes it a little more difficult to maneuver due to its increased length. However, the mirror allows you to see 90° to the side of the camera. This is especially helpful when looking under manifolds and inside a transmission bell-housing.

The second attachment they include is a hook. The hook tool allows you to reach into areas and grab ahold of wires or debris that have to move. It won’t interfere with the camera and lights, allowing you to see what you’re hooking as you’re doing it. But even more useful than the hook is the last attachment.

The hook tool is great for pulling wires or small hoses through tight spaces but lacks effectiveness for picking things up. That is exactly why the third attachment for the CV84 borescope is a magnet. A lost bolt or nut while building an engine is never a good thing, especially with open intake ports. Even just a small interior screw can destroy a cylinder if left inside. But with the magnet attachment, you won’t have to worry about that happening. In our testing, the magnet was able to hold onto a heavy T55 bit socket. So no matter the bolt or socket, the magnet attachment will certainly be able to pull out any magnetic foreign object from harm’s way.
