MINI Cooper N14 High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) - Symptoms And Product Review
If you own an R56 MINI, there's probably a good chance you've looked up a replacement high-pressure fuel pump. The N14 engine found in the R56 is a Prince engine, which is part of the Peugeot, Citroën, and BMW family. It's incredibly common for the HPFP to fail, so much so that MINI issued a service bulletin for it. Instead of buying Genuine MINI, you can save yourself quite a bit of money by purchasing the Genuine PSA HPFP, instead.
MINI Cooper N14 High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Replacement Symptoms
MINI released a service bulletin related to the high-pressure fuel pump. It's well known and established that they fail prematurely, and if it isn't addressed, it can result in catastrophic engine damage. Failure is almost always internal, so it is tough to diagnose.
- Sputtering/surging
- Rough cold starts
- Stalling on start
- Rough running
- Running lean
- Intermittent misfires
- Check Engine Code
- P2880 High-Pressure System Code
There isn't an exact mileage that the HPFP begins to fail at. It's common for these to fail as early as 40,000 miles. At around that mileage, I'd begin watching for the symptoms above.
If you decide to tackle this job yourself, it's not too involved. On a scale of 1-5, this falls perfectly in between. Anyone with basic tools and wrenching abilities can complete it in around 3 hours.
