BMW E90 Control Arms, Balls Joints, Tie Rods, & End Links Kit (328xi, 330xi, X1) - Fitment, Failure Symptoms, & Review
The front suspension of your BMW E90 has components that typically wear at, more or less, the same rate. Instead of replacing just one component, we made a front suspension refresh kit to help you replace everything that you should all at once while in there. When it comes to the BMW E90 and BMW X1, BMW incorporated the bushings and ball joints into the arms themselves to make replacement simple.
BMW E90 & BMW X1 Front Control Arm Kit Replacement Symptoms
When the front suspension components start to wear on your AWD (xi) BMW E90, there are a few symptoms you'll start to notice.
- Clunking, bumping, and rattling when driving over bumps or rough roads.
- Handling and steering that feels "loose."
- This might be noticeable if you drive a car with a refreshed suspension, or if you can think back to how your car felt when you first got it. It's especially noticeable in fast corners or where there are uneven roads.
- Vibration in the steering wheel
- As the ball joint gets close to the point of failing, it can become so severely worn that vibration is transferred up through your steering wheel. If this is the case, it should be replaced immediately.
- Suspension Alignment Issues
- The first sign of this is if your tires have uneven wear across the tread. If this is the case, you should check your suspension components for excessive wear.
You don't want to ignore these warning signs that your control arm bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends need replacement. The longer you wait, the more stress it applies to other parts of your suspension. Complete ball joint or bushing failure can lead to catastrophic suspension failure that can result in an accident.
Front control arm bushings and ball joints are usually worn out around 70,000 miles. You should start to inspect these components during your regular inspections around that mileage.
If you bring your BMW E90 or X1 to the dealer or shop to have your front control arms and related components replaced, it could run upward of $2000 for labor and parts. By doing the job yourself, it will only cost you a small fraction of that.
