The Genuine Porsche water pump that came on the 996 911 featured a plastic impeller. Over time, the plastic breaks down leading to the impeller breaking loose and debris finding their way through your cooling system.

Porsche 996 911 Water Pump Kit Replacement Symptoms

Due to the above mentioned fact that Porsche used a plastic water pump impeller (much like BMW with the E36), water pump failure is more common than you would expect. Over time, the plastic breaks down and the impeller will break apart. Those pieces get drawn through your cooling system and can clog up the cylinder head or engine block. With the coolant ports clogged and your water pump inoperable, you will experience two main symptoms:

  • Coolant Leaks
  • Overheating

Porsche 996 911's don't necessarily have a standard service interval for the water pump. It's typically recommended to replace the water pump every three-years as preventative maintenance

It isn't difficult to replace your water pump on your 996. On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the most difficult of projects, water pump replacement is around a 2. I would budget around two hours to complete the job.

If your water pump with a plastic impeller has failed, there's a good chance that the thermostat is full of plastic debris. We recommend replacing it while you have everything apart.
