How To Change The Oil In An Audi S5 (Audi B8/B8.5 4.2 L V8)
Keeping track of your the age and condition of your oil is an essential part of owning an Audi B8/B8.5 with the 4.2 L V8 engine like the Audi S5. The oil’s job is to keep everything inside the engine lubricated and happy. As the oil is used, its lubricating properties fade, leading to increased wear on the engine components. The new synthetic oils that companies like Audi use can last up to 10,000 miles, nearly triple that of conventional oil.
Changing your oil can be an important step in learning how to service your Audi B8/B8.5. Oil changes are some of the simplest jobs you can do at home and can make you more conscious of the importance of looking after your car.

In an engine, the oil’s job is to lubricate all of the moving parts. Without the lubrication, parts would wear rapidly, sending debris through the engine before it locks up.
Over time, the oil itself will degrade. The molecules inside of the oil break down, causing the oil to lose its viscosity. Modern synthetic oils last significantly longer than conventional oil, but still require scheduled changes. Always check with your vehicle’s manufacturer or its manual to find out how often you should change your oil.

How much will it cost to complete an Audi B8/B8.5 4.2 L V8 oil change?

For that, you get a new OE filter, nine liters of LIQUI MOLY oil, a new drain plug with its crush washer, and the oil filter housing seal. Steps required to complete an Audi B8/B8.5 4.2 L V8 oil change:
Step 1: Drain the oil
Remove the oil filler cap and add the engine flush. The 4.2L V8 uses nine liters of oil, so you’ll need to add two cans of the engine flush to the engine. Then let the car run for ten minutes to allow the flush to circulate through the engine and clean away any gunk. Skip this step if you aren’t using the engine flush.
With the car turned off, jack the car up and place it on jack stands. Then use a flat-head screwdriver to unlock the eleven fasteners used to secure the chassis’ plastic undertray. Turn the locks 90° to the left to unlock them. Dirt and debris are trapped above the undertray, so be careful when you remove it.
Next, place a drain pan under the drain plug. Use a 6mm Allen wrench or socket to remove the drain plug from the oil pan. The oil will be very hot if you do this right after driving or circulating the engine flush.
Let the oil drain until nothing is dripping out of the oil pan. Then install the new drain plug and crush washer. Use a T47 socket to tighten the new drain plug to 30Nm.
Grab the undertray and refit it to the car. Then, take the car off of the jack stands and set it onto the ground.
Step 2: Replace the oil filter
Head into the engine bay and remove the dress-up cover from the intake manifold.
The oil filter housing sits just behind the intake manifold. Use a 32mm socket to remove the oil filter housing cap and oil filter.
Hold the filter over the housing to allow the oil to drain out of it. Have a rag handy to prevent covering the engine in oil as you remove the filter from the engine bay. Then, pull the old filter off of the cap and throw it out.
Use a pick or flat-head screwdriver to remove the old O-ring from the oil filter housing cap. Dab the new O-ring with some fresh oil and then install it onto the cap. Then, press the new filter into the cap. Push the tab-side of the filter into the cap to lock the filter in place.
Place the new filter and cap assembly back into the oil filter housing and thread it in by hand. Use a 32mm socket to torque the filter cap to 24.5Nm.
Step 3: Add the new oil
Remove the cap and ready whatever funnel you are going to use. Then pour in the new oil. Add the LIQUI MOLY Cera Tec now if you are using it. Use the same amount of Cera Tec as you did of the Engine Flush. Add only eight liters of oil when using the Cera Tec. Check the oil level after a few minutes. Add whatever amount of oil is needed to bring it to the full mark on the dipstick.
With the oil added, refit the dress-up cover to the engine.
Step 4: Reset the service interval indicator
With the key turned to ignition on, go through the vehicle’s settings until you find the “service interval display.” Select it, and select “reset service change interval.” Then, follow the prompts to reset it.
Audi B8/B8.5 4.2 L V8 oil change torque specs:
- Audi Drain Plug = 30Nm or 22 ft-lbs of torque
- Audi Oil Filter Cap 24.5Nm or 18 ft-lbs of torque
