Changing oil is probably the most straightforward DIY projects an owner can tackle—as long as the manufacturer put all the vehicle’s oil holes in the right places. Once you can get past the Land Rover LR3’s stout skid plate, this job is fair sailing.
Expect this job to take about 30-40 minutes, much of which will be spent removing and installing the skid plate.

Allow the engine to cool down before doing this job. Hot oil can burn you.
The LR3 already has a good deal of ground clearance when the suspension is dialed up to full off-road setting. For this job, we stacked a couple scrap pieces of 2x10 board on top of each other and drove the front tires on top of them. This created plenty of room to work without the need for jack stands.
Procedure
Raise the suspension to full off-road lift. Place the transmission in Park and set the parking brake.
Remove the oil cap from on top of the engine.
Place a jack under the vehicle’s front skid plate. The thick steel plate weighs probably 20 pounds, so this jack will be your extra set of hands. Use a 10 mm socket and a 13mm socket to remove the bolts holding the skid plate in place.
Use the floor jack to lower the skid plate.
Set your drain pan under the drain plug, and use a 13mm bolt to loosen the plug. Remove the plug, and allow the oil to completely drain out. This may take a few minutes.
Install a new washer on the drain plug, and reinstall the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug so that it seats snugly.
Remove the oil filter. We were able to spin this one off by hand, but you may need to use an oil filter wrench. More oil will drain out, so have the pan ready.
Wipe some fresh oil on the new oil filter’s rubber gasket. Install the new oil filter, turning it hand tight. Pour the fresh oil into the fill tube. Reinstall the oil filler cap.
Go for a quick test drive, and check for leaks.
Reinstall the skid plate, using the jack to hold it in place while you install the bolts.
