As I tacked on mile after mile on project B7 S4's clock, I suddenly realized that I overlooked the most basic routine maintenance one should first handle whenever taking possession of a used vehicle, changing the oil. In our initial review of project Audi B7 S4, we noted that we did have a slight oil consumption problem, though not immediate cause for alarm, as higher performance engines such as the BHF will commonly consume a bit of oil between changes. This is not something to be concerned with in ownership of an S4, no more than it's just the nature of the beast, plus we are a bit up there in mileage. With oil blends and vehicles of this era being capable of going far longer in between oil changes, it is important to check your fluid regularly and not rely on your oil warning light or service sticker to tell you what/when to do it. Now, the BHF 4.2L is pretty thirsty when it comes to oil, taking 9.5 liters of 5W40, which means an oil change can get pretty pricey. With several kits available, I decided to use our Audi S4 oil change kit from ROWE on project B7 S4.
Now, we can attest to the durability of ROWE oils and fluids as we put them to the test in our C300 AER race car, which often does a grueling nine hours of continued racing. This fluid should be more than adequate for our project vehicle. We are going to be running their HC-D Hightec full synthetic oil, coupled with an OEM filter from Mann and replacement drain plug from Corteco. ROWE fluid meets and exceeds VW 502 00/505 00 specifications and is made in Germany, a huge one up, as ROWE specializes in producing oils for many European makes and models. Through their race efforts, they know very well how to transfer that knowledge and R&D to customers. Glad I remembered to get the fluid changed, looks like it has not been swapped out in a while as the fluid was clearly past due for a change. Stay tuned for our video where we walk you through oil change process.
