Proper Winter Tires – A must!
Any car's performance in wintry weather will be enhanced with a proper set of winter tires. These may also be called “snow tires” or “snows” for short. “Winter Tires” is perhaps a much more accurate name for them as their advantages go beyond superb traction in the snow and ice. All-season tires, let alone summer performance tires, become very hard as the temperature drops around and below freezing. Their rubber is no longer supple, which limits their traction in slippery conditions. They essentially become like hockey pucks on the surface of the snow!
Winter tires behave much differently when the temperature is below freezing. First, the rubber is much softer. This means that the tires’ tread will be able to do its job much better as it can flex as necessary. The tread of a winter tire is much more aggressively grooved. They can dig in much deeper in snow and are designed to channel water/slush away from the tread. For an even more aggressive winter tire, or if your area sees extreme ice and snowy conditions, you may want to consider winter tires with spikes as well.
Again, a good set of snow tires is perhaps the most important component to making ANY vehicle good in the snow regardless of its drivetrain layout. Not only will you have better traction for acceleration, your vehicles steering and braking will be more responsive.
Good Wipers & Windshield Washer Fluid
Often overlooked until they are needed the most, wipers play an important role during the winter. A pair of good quality wipers is a wise investment for your vehicle…simply put, it is not safe if you are struggling to see out of your windshield!
A modern, frameless design is desirable in the winter. This prevents your wipers from “packing up” due to excessive snow and ice buildup on them. They can be freed from the window much easier than the framed design as well. It is also important to top up your washer fluid with a solution that can withstand low temperatures and will aid in de-icing your windshield.
Strong Battery & Alternator
During the winter months, you’ll often find yourself running your vehicles accessories more often. Things like your wipers, headlights, fogs, window defroster etc. draw a considerable load from the alternator. Not to mention, those cold morning starts work your battery much harder. It is imperative that your battery provides the manufacturer's recommended CCA (cold cranking amps) to start your car and also that the alternator is charging the battery properly. Your local auto parts store can test both your battery and alternator to ensure they are functioning properly. A failed alternator will leave you stranded and a dead battery won’t start your car.
Working Heat
If the heat in your car is not working, often a simple heater core replacement is all that is needed! These tend not to run too expensive and can be repaired in an hour or so. The P80 Volvos are notorious for having leaky heater cores. Once fixed, you’ll be able to enjoy sauna like temperatures as you please!
