Volvo Power Steering Fluid - Should I use ATF or CHF 11S?
Volvo has specified a few different power steering fluids over the last 15-20 years. Due to some overlap, it can be confusing which one is actually specified for your vehicle.
P80
Focusing mainly on the front wheel drive models, the 93-00 P80 Platform consisted of the 850, S70, and V70 models. The 98-04 C70 also applies. These vehicles all specify Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid. (ATF) Although the 99-00 models utilized a different power steering pump used on later models, Dexron III is specified in the owner's manual.
P2
The P2 generation began with the full-sized S80 sedan from 1999-2006. This was Volvo's first vehicle to specify Pentosin CHF-11S power steering fluid. Other P2 models that utilize this fluid are the 01-09 S60 sedan, 03-14 XC90, and the 01-07 V70 wagon.
Vintage RWD
RWD models like the 240, 740, and 940 may have interchanged between Type F and Dexron III transmission fluid. Depending on the original steering rack fitted to the vehicle, it's safest to check the manual for your exact model and trim level to be sure the correct fluid is used. Using Dexron III in a vehicle designed for Type F will cause the steering rack's seals to fail over time.
