This DIY is easy to do, unless you discover a big mess like I did and have to spend time cleaning it all up.

Tools you’ll need:

  • new spark plugs
  • 5/8” spark plug socket
  • sockets, ratchet
  • Torx bit set
  • torque wrench
  • about 30-60 min of free time

Ready to replace your spark plugs?

Step 1: Raise the hood and remove the air pipe above the engine:

Step 2: Remove the engine covers by removing the 8 Torx screws, pushing back on the side clips to remove the timing belt cover first then lifting off the spark plug area cover:

Step 3: Remove 5 bolts holding down the ignition coils:

Step 4: Detach the left connector:

Step 5: Remove the ground bolt near the 2nd ignition coil pack which attaches the harness to the engine, then carefully pull out all of the coil packs and lay it to the side:

Step 6: Remove all 5 spark plugs using a ⅝” spark plug socket and note which one came out of each cylinder:

Step 7: Examine the old plugs to see if there’s anything beyond just worn out electrodes. For example, there could be a bigger issue if one has an oily or cracked insulator. Worn normal plugs should just appear uniform across the set.

Step 8: Installation is the reverse of removal. New spark plugs should be torqued to 22 ft-lb.

When everything is back together start the car to ensure it runs smooth and enjoy renewed engine performance!
