If the air from your LR3’s HVAC system is starting to get that old gymsock smell, it might be time to replace the cabin air filter. The entire job takes less than 10 minutes. Three minutes if you have done it before.
Diagnosis:
In case you’re not keeping track of the maintenance intervals for this part, there are two rather common ways to tell your cabin filter needs to be replaced:
- Smell – If your vehicle’s A/C smells bad, it could likely be due to a buildup of pollen, leaves, or other aging natural material caught in the filter. Change it!
- Airflow During A/C – Ever use the A/C, and you can hear the fan running but there’s barely any air coming from the vents? That’s a side effect of an old filter. If the filter is too clogged with debris, it can restrict airflow. This can cause the evaporator unit (in the dashboard) to freeze over, restricting airflow even more.

Procedure:
Open the Glovebox. Find the guides on both sides of the glovebox, and pinch the two prongs together. This will allow the glovebox to open even further.
Allow the glovebox to swing all the way open. This is will give access to the fuse panel and the cabin air filter housing.
Pinch this clip to release the cabin filter cover.
Remove the old cabin air filter.
Insert the new filter into the housing, and slide it upward. (Note: If you don’t lift it up, the filter can touch the blower fan and make a lot of horrible noises).
Step 1: Slide new filter in.
Step 2: Slide new filter up.
Reinstall the cabin cover by first inserting the tabs on the left side, then the right side should clip back in. Close the glovebox (Make sure the guides on both sides are properly aligned.) Turn on the fan and enjoy that clean air!
