Factory options decoders are extremely helpful tools that take the guesswork out of selecting the proper components for a vehicle. For BMW, Mercedes and Audi vehicles, there are some publicly available tools that make retrieval of that information extremely simple.

Audi/VW

I have yet to find a free, easily accessible Audi tool that uses the VIN to decode the option codes on the vehicle. Audi normally posts a sticker in the rear tire well or under the rear seat.  http://prsearch.planetvag.com/ allows you to enter the codes from your options sticker and decodes the information accurately.

BMW & Mercedes-Benz

BMW and Mercedes owners have a handful of tools available for determining vehicle options, the most notable are ETK.CC for BMW and  the Mercedes EPC (electronic parts catalog). ETK.cc's VIN decoder provides options information and allows an export to PDF format for extremely easy record keeping for your vehicle. It also conveniently provides fluid capacity information at the top of the screen.

Mercedes offers a free subscription based service that is a goldmine of information.  Users can subscribe at http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/subscribe.jsp and once subscribed you can launch the application from a the login link http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/login.jsp

Tools like this are important because these European vehicles come with a myriad of options and as a result locating the correct part can become a nightmare. Purchasing the wrong steering column clockspring for a BMW vehicle that originally came with a heated steering wheel or the wrong antenna mast for a 560SEL Mercedes is all too common when the research is not attempted prior to purchasing parts from online retailers. As I come across helpful tools for other makes I will continue to share them with you.

What tools have you come across that are helpful in deciphering vehicle options?
