Auxiliary Fan Troubleshooting? Check this first (Audi A6)
I recently acquired an Audi A6 Avant and one of the first things I noticed was the Air Conditioning system was not functioning. I checked the refrigerant level and it was low so I charged the system, got the air functioning and uncovered a new issue. The A/C condenser fan was not functioning. On a typical vehicle the fan circuit will consist of a fan, fan switch, relay, and fuse. On the C5 A6 the circuit replaces the relay with a fan control module. When the engine is running and the A/C is turned on, the auxiliary fan should immediately turn on and module controls how fast the fan operates.
So what do you check first when a fused circuit stops working, you check the fuse! On a C5 Audi start by removing the cosmetic cover above the steering column.
This will expose the two upper 8mm head screws on either side of the column.
Remove the cosmetic cover from the drivers side fuse panel. This is only held in with clips and will easily come out.
This will provide you access to one fastener that is located behind that fuse panel.
Remove the two lower screws on the under column knee panel and the panel will drop to the providing you access to the fuse panel containing the 40 AMP fan fuse.
In this instance I removed the fan and observed it was blown and prevented the circuit from sending power to the fan.
You can tell the fuse is blown because the internal metal strip has separated. We offer replacement fan fuses, fan control modules and fan motors for all C5 Audi's.
