The 2nd and 3rd generation turbocharged two-liter Audi and Volkswagen engines feature a crankcase ventilation system (PCV) that is crucial to your engine's performance. If your breather/oil separator is failing, VW offers an updated genuine breather replacement.

Although Volkswagen/Audi doesn't consider the PCV system a regular maintenance system, it's well known that these parts fail quite regularly. The symptoms are easily diagnosed as other failures, however, the PCV system should always be checked early on in the diagnostic process as it's easy to replace/repair and the parts are affordable.

Audi & Volkswagen MK6 PCV Oil Separator Failure Symptoms

As mentioned above, a properly functioning PCV system is vital to how well your engine runs. Symptoms of a failing PCV system show up in many different ways, with some being easier to diagnose than others. The symptoms are:

  • Vacuum Leaks
  • Illuminated Check Engine Light
  • Illuminated Oil Pressure Light
  • Rough Idle
  • High Oil Consumption
  • Lean & Misfire Codes P0300 & P0171
  • Idle Regulation Codes
  • Whistling Noise from Engine Cover
  • Oil Leak from Rear Main Seal

Symptoms of a failing PCV system can start to show at any time. However, most people begin noticing symptoms around 60,000 to 80,000 miles.

Another option instead of replacing your oil separator is deleting your PCV completely and replacing with a catch can. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, we recommend 034Motorsport's oil catch can kit. This kit is designed to prevent oil from depositing in the intake manifold and intake valves, resulting in drastically reduced carbon buildup and extended life of the intake manifold flapper assembly.
