Extended oil change intervals are defying age-old myths about how long oil will last. Not only do they save money by reducing the amount of oil changes your vehicle needs, but they reduce the amount of waste oil coming back to recycling facilities. When a BMW indicates its oil is spent, how do you reset the reminder after you've changed the oil?

No tools are needed for this procedure in most cases, and it should only take about five minutes. Many E90-based vehicles follow this procedure, like the 3-Series, X1, and 1-Series.

Procedure

Step 1: Sit in the vehicle and ensure all of the doors are shut.

Step 2: Turn on the ignition but do not start the vehicle. (All of the dash lights should illuminate briefly)

Step 3: Press the small reset button in the cluster and hold it for five seconds until the service information appears.

Step 4: Using the indicator stalk, scroll using the up & down wheel until the oil life is displayed in the gauge cluster.

Step 5: Press and hold the BC button on the stalk until RESET appears in the cluster.

Step 6: Press and hold the BC button until the reset is confirmed in the gauge cluster.

This procedure can be performed for the other service interval resets such as brake fluid, brake pad, and chassis service reminders.
