How To Replace The Front And Rear Brakes On A Volvo S60/V70 R Model
The "R" model utilizes Brembo's fixed calipers, rather than the "floating" design used on inferior models.
The P2 chassis Volvo S60R & V70R models were Volvo's performance version of the base models which carried on the tradition from the mid 90's 850 T-5R. The P2 R's came with a 300 horsepower engine, a bigger turbocharger, a semi-active suspension with Four-C "Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept" that allows the user to select from three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Advanced, blue faced instrument cluster gauges, an optional sporty aerodynamics kit, 6-speed transmission, and last but not least - large Brembo 4 piston calipers.
Changing the brakes on these cars however can be quite different from the non R models as the Brembo calipers are of a fixed designed compared to the normal floating design. While this setup can look quite intimidating, the truth is that they're actually easier to maintain.
The below video demonstrates how to change your front and rear pads and rotors on an R model car. We opted to go with Hawk Performance Street 5.0 "B" compound pads paired withBrembo rotors. The Hawk pads are a Ferro-Carbon compound brake pad that provides advanced braking characteristics to enhance the driving experience. This compound combines the safety and quality of aerospace design partnered with the braking technology of Motorsports. The results are shorter stopping distances, improved performance under heavy braking conditions and street car friendly characteristics.
