Brittle plastic is the inconvenient truth of 90's Volvo ownership. Whether it be broken dashboard mounts, interior trim pieces, or turn signals, nothing is safe from shattering in the palm of your hand.

In particular, "Little fender blinkers" are quite easy to break, and quite difficult to find in the junkyard in good shape. I always managed to break these because I was too stubborn to look up how to do it, so if I can save a few sets by writing this, I'll feel a whole lot better.

Removal

Find a mint set of marker lights at the junkyard? Don't break them! Removing these is easy, but the procedure isn't obvious at first glance.

The thin side of the marker light will always point towards the front of the car. The thick side faces the back. To remove them, slide the entire light towards the front of the vehicle along the fender, then pull the thick part outwards. Any other way is sure to break the fragile plastic tabs on these lights.

Installation

Installation is reverse of removal. Mount the thick side into the notch in the fender, then pop the thin side in until the tab clicks.

Upgrades

There isn't much in the way of lighting modifications for a Volvo S70, but the OEM+ or European look is easily attainable. Volvos prior to 1999 did not come equipped with fender blinkers, and a retrofit kit will not only improve safety while passing, but make the car look better too.

Kits are available in clear or amber lens colors, and now you won't break them.
