Audi B8 & Volkswagen 2.0T (A4, GTI, Q5 & More) Turbo Diverter Valve - Symptoms And Product Review
The Audi B8, B8.5 and Volkswagens with the 2.0T engine come equipped with an electric bypass valve for the turbocharger system, also known as a turbo diverter valve. When this valve fails, it's easy to diagnose the issue as a much more costly problem.
Your turbo diverter valve or electric bypass valve is responsible for releasing built-up back pressure behind your turbocharger compressor. If pressure is not released, it acts as a brake effect on the compressor wheel which is known as "turbo lag". Sometimes the problem can go unnoticed. Other times, it makes itself very apparent.
Audi B8 & VW 2.0T Turbo Diverter Valve Replacement Symptoms
There is really only one way that these diverter valves fail, and that is when the diaphragm tears. When this happens, it causes an underboost fault. The symptoms of a failed diverter valve are similar to that of a failing turbo, so you want to diagnose the problem and start by replacing the valve itself. Some of the symptoms are:
- Increased turbo lag
- Fault Code P0299
- This is a turbo underboost fault. If you're getting this fault code, it could mean that either you're having a turbocharger issue, or an issue with this valve. In your diagnostic process, start by checking this valve.
There isn't an exact mileage or time frame that this issue occurs. Some people never notice symptoms where as other people have reported needed to replace this three times within 20,000 miles.
If you decide to tackle this job, it's extremely simple to replace. It is only held on by three allen fasteners and a single connector. It is located underneath the car on the turbocharger housing.
