The Volkswagen Routan is a minivan marketed by the German auto maker towards the North American market, for sale since the 2009 model year, and is still in production today. The Routan is actually nothing more than a Dodge Grand Caravan with slightly revised styling, as well as some different suspension tuning. The Routan was created because Volkswagen had no minivan model for sale in the United States market at the time, which was needed especially since even the Eurovan had ceased production in 2003. Volkswagen previously made a minivan called the Touran, but it was not sold here. The Routan and Touran do not share a platform, instead Volkswagen and Daimler-Chrysler made an agreement to produce the Routan which is built exclusively in North America. The Routan has a six speed automatic transmission and is available with one of three Chrysler engines – either a 197 horsepower OHV 3.8L V6, a 4.0L SOHC V6 that produces 251 horsepower, and new for 2011 a DOHC 3.6L V6 that pumps out 283 horsepower which is by far the most powerful despite its having the smallest displacement of the three.
