Next, run the engine at idling speed for 15 seconds in the R position. Finally, for 15 seconds in the P position. The fluid inspection is done with the selector lever in the P position and your Saab’s engine running. Take the dipstick out of the transmission tube and wipe it with a rag. Put the dipstick back into the tube and pull it out again. Some transmissions will give a wrong reading the first time the dipstick is pulled out, so always check it twice to ensure a proper reading. It is important to look to the markings on your Saab’s dipstick to find out the current level your transmission fluid is at. There are low and high markings on the dipstick to show you the correct level. Top off your transmission by putting a funnel into your dipstick tube and pouring the fluid into your funnel. Make sure to not overfill, as this can bring on slippage, overheating, and transmission failure. Inspect the transmission fluid in the final drive, the second part of the transmission that is the differential gear and unit that rotates your wheels. To examine this, take out the filler hole plug on the side of your Saab’s transmission case at the right gear. Fill with transmission fluid to or right under the bottom of the filler hole.
